The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is probably the best, if not, one of the best scholarship programs for minority students in the United States. If you want more information on whether you qualify, or can apply please visit www.gmsp.org. The applications are online and they involve a very minute process of detailing all of your successes, both personally and academically. Please be aware that the last class of students that will be funded are those who graduate in the 2016-2017 academic year with full funding until 2027-2028.
1,000 lucky seniors (and GED recipients) receive this good-to-graduation scholarship funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It pays all unmet need (determined by FASFA) to any university of the student's choice for undergraduate study, and if the student continues in any of the GMS funded graduate areas, they receive capped limits depending on if they attend a public or private institution. You are required to attend college as a full time student, but in addition to this, it is expected that you engage in leadership and service while completing your college education.
One of the most important parts of the scholarship application are the eight (8) lengthy essays that build an image of who you are. Many people are intimidated to accomplish this great feat, but the most important part of this process is to start EARLY! Early intervention is the best medicine, especially in knowing how to sell yourself as a valuable candidate for this scholarship and possibly as a leader in this great country. Also you must have a recommendor and a nominator which serve as the individuals who will speak about your academic and extra-curricular & community success. I saved the GMS practice form from last year's application cycle which details all parts of the application process so that people start early. The most important part for those high school students who still have time to apply, please be aware that volunteering and community service is highly regarded for this scholarship.
The essays that are included in the practice form should be written to detail your personal aspirations, tribulations and all other information that would make you a perfect candidate for the GMS Scholarship and a candidate to contribute to the future of your discipline, and the country. Think about the bigger picture for example, "how can I use my experiences as a student-volunteer-community participant to make a better future for others?" or even think about "what are my passions, and how can I evoke that knowledge and hope to others through the GMSP scholarship?" Always reference the importance of how a scholarship of this caliber can assist you in reaching your dreams of engaging in scholarship, and most importantly build a better professional for your family, community, and country.
GMS opens many-many doors, it is not only a financial support for your post secondary degree, but it is a key to other opportunities due to GMS being highly respected among different educational entities and internship programs in the U.S.. One of my summer research opportunities as an undergraduate student, where I participated in CIC Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at The Ohio State University was largely due to my success as a Gates Scholar. My welcome e-mail stated specifically that they had wonderful interactions with other Gates Scholars and they were eager to accept me.
I have found a website which offers pro bono essay feedback and other scholarships, especially the GMSP scholarship. Scholarship Junkies also has a highly recommended scholarship resource page which includes online national resources for genuine scholarships.
Please be careful, as the scholarship and fellowship scam market is grand and many have been taken by these scammers that try to obtain important personal information.
**More to come as I continue updating and finding new resources
